outfit Styling guide

Choosing what to wear for family photos can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The goal is not perfection, it’s coordination, comfort, and choosing outfits that help your family look natural and timeless without distracting from the connection between you. Whether your session is in Okeechobee, Florida or a nearby area, these tips will help you feel confident and prepared for your family photos.

Start With a Simple Color Palette: Instead of matching exactly, focus on coordinating colors that work well together. Some great color palettes include: soft neutrals (beige, cream, white, tan), earthy tones (olive, rust, brown, warm gray), soft pastels (dusty blue, muted pink, sage green). Try to avoid overly bright or neon colors, as they can distract from your faces and the natural feel of your photos. I will include some color pallets below, some based on seasons and others based on a specific style.

Keep Patterns Minimal: Simple patterns can work, but it’s best to use them sparingly. Good choices include: light florals, soft stripes, subtle textures.

Try to Avoid: Large logos or graphics, bold busy patterns on multiple people, clothing that draws too much attention away from your family connection.

Coordinate, Don’t Match: One of the most common mistakes is dressing everyone exactly the same. Instead, aim for outfits that complement each other. For example: one person in a soft dress, another in a neutral shirt and jeans, kids in simple, comfortable outfits that match the color palette. This creates a natural, effortless look in photos.

Comfort Matters Most: If you or your kids are uncomfortable, it will show in the photos. Choose outfits that allow movement, especially for little ones. For kids: avoid stiff or restrictive clothing, choose outfits they can sit, run, and play in. For adults: make sure you feel confident and relaxed, avoid anything you constantly need to adjust.

Shoes and Accessories: Shoes and accessories are often overlooked but can make a difference. Stick with neutral shoes (sandals, boots, simple sneakers). Avoid overly bright or distracting footwear. Keep jewelry simple and minimal. Hats can work well in outdoor sessions if they fit the style.

What Photographs Best: As a natural light, true-to-tone photographer, I always recommend outfits that feel timeless and soft. The best choices are: natural fabrics (linen, cotton, flowy materials), layered outfits for texture, clothing that moves naturally in the wind.

If You’re Planning a Session: If you’re booking a family session in Okeechobee, Florida or surrounding areas, I’m always happy to help with outfit planning. I can give feedback on clothing choices to make sure everything fits the style of your session perfectly. A good rule: have one person in a noticeable pattern (gingham, floral, plaid, stripes), then pull 2–4 solid colors from that pattern for everyone else. Add texture through linen, knit, denim, corduroy, or woven fabrics so the photos don't look flat.
