Golden Hour in a Field
I recently photographed a beautiful family maternity session in Martin County, Florida, in an open field just outside of Okeechobee during golden hour. The soft evening light, warm tones, and relaxed atmosphere made this session feel incredibly natural and meaningful. This session included a mom, dad, and their 2-year-old son as they prepare to welcome a new baby into their family. It was a simple, heartfelt evening focused on connection, love, and genuine moments together. Okeechobee & Martin County has some of the most beautiful open landscapes for photography, especially at sunset. The wide fields and soft light during golden hour create the perfect setting for timeless family and maternity portraits. From the beginning of the session, this family was extremely comfortable in front of the camera. They were relaxed, natural, and easy to photograph, which allowed everything to flow effortlessly. Their little boy quickly became the center of attention in the best way, he was full of curiosity, exploring the field, and keeping everyone laughing throughout the session. Moments like that are what I love most about family photography. Children don’t always stay still, and they don’t need to. Some of the most meaningful images come from letting them explore and capturing the real interactions that unfold naturally. My approach to photography is always a mix of gentle direction and candid storytelling. I guide families when needed, but I also step back and allow real moments to happen naturally. Every family is different, so I adjust the session to match their comfort level and energy so nothing ever feels stiff or forced. For this session, we moved through a mix of lightly posed portraits and candid moments. Some of my favorite images came from the in-between interactions, moments of laughter, walking together through the field, and quiet connection between mom and dad. One of my favorite parts of the session was photographing the couple together during their solo moments. There was such a calm, connected feeling between them that really stood out in the final gallery. But even more special were the moments when the entire family walked hand in hand, laughing together as their son explored between them. Those candid walking shots perfectly captured this season of their life.
